InsurTech firm Gigasure introduces GigaShield feature

It assists travellers in the event of flight and baggage delays

InsurTech provider Gigasure has unveiled GigaShield, its new real-time compensation benefit for flight and baggage delays.

Available through the Gigasure mobile app, GigaShield automatically provides cash payments to travellers when disruptions impact their plans.

It's designed to simplify the stressful experience of travel disruptions, providing a modern solution tailored to today’s travellers.

Through the Gigasure app, GigaShield offers real-time cash assistance that activates instantly when a qualifying delay occurs. As the holiday season often brings flight delays and lost baggage, GigaShield delivers quick support to ease the hassle and help travellers carry on with their holiday plans.

Forbes reported that around 30,000 flights are delayed globally everyday, while a recent poll by IBS Software found that 71% of those who have travelled abroad in the last year had their flights either delayed or cancelled, with their plans thrown into turmoil.

Statistics by the BBC also show that 26 million pieces of luggage were lost, delayed or damaged last year – that’s seven in every 1,000 bags going astray while travelling abroad.

That is, on average, two to three people per flight will get that sinking feeling when they arrive at their destination and their bags fail to appear on the baggage carousel.

Through the Gigasure app, travellers with the GigaShield Flight Delay benefit activated can choose and claim one of two compensation options when their flight is delayed by three hours or more.

Core and Pro plan customers can opt for either a VIP lounge pass to relax in while they wait or a fast cash payment deposited directly into their account for airport essentials.

Max plan customers can choose between a lounge pass with a voucher or a one-time payment to their bank account.

Once travellers register their flight in the app, it’s tracked in real-time, and if a delay occurs, they receive an automatic notification prompting them to select their preferred benefit.

GigaShield Baggage Delay provides customers with a rapid cash payment if their bags fail to turn up at their destination.

Once the traveller has reported the situation to the baggage handling team, they are issued with a Property Irregularity Number (PIR).

The traveller inputs this number into their Gigasure app which automatically issues a payment to purchase any necessary items.

Ernesto Suarez, CEO of Gigasure, said: “GigaShield is another great example of how Gigasure is bringing innovation to travel insurance, providing initiatives that put travellers front of centre of everything we offer. We can’t stop the inconvenience of a flight being delayed or a bag not arriving, but we can provide support to make the situation a little bit easier for travellers.

“We know travellers are worried about flight and baggage delays, it’s understandable given the statistics.

“Through our app, Gigasure is fast becoming a reliable and trusted travel companion in your pocket.

"GigaShield is just one example of how Gigasure exists to make travel insurance more of an experience, rather than just something you buy and forget about until you need it.”

Gigasure said it is bringing a "new era" by offering transparency and flexibility to travel insurance, with customisable travel policies.

Through its app, Gigasure customers are able to customise their insurance policies, add-on cover for certain activities and eventualities and make a claim, all in one place.

GigaShield Flight Delay and GigaShield Baggage Delay benefits are valid only for and at the airport.
