Online travel agency Lastminute.com has extended its carbon offsetting scheme to include its dynamic packages.

The Carbonwise scheme, which was launched in November 2006 for flight-only bookings, will feature on products such as city breaks from June 2007.

Lastminute.com claims that more than one in ten of its flight-only customers use the scheme, provided by Climate Care, to offset their carbon emissions. This apparently equates to around 7,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which, the company helpfully explains, is the equivalent of 1,875 elephants.

Lastminute.com chief executive Ian McCaig said: “I’m confident the expansion of the scheme into dynamic packaging will see even more customers support the carbonwise initiative.”

The Carbonwise scheme is based on a carbon calculator which works out and displays the carbon dioxide emissions of a flight and the cost of the offset and then invites the customer to offset their flight emissions.
