Price comparison website Cheapflights has named software guru Lisa Underkoffler as its first product director.

The move is part of a wider effort by the company to strengthen its management team and will see Underkoffler take responsibility for functionality, services and new products across the US and UK sites.

Underkoffler has been acting as a consultant for the company since June 2005, but the appointment comes as Cheapflights looks to “accelerate” its growth and “exploit major opportunities” in the UK, US and other regions globally.

Alongside holding senior positions at a string of leading software companies, including IBM, Interleaf, Slate and Trellix, Underkoffler also worked on the first electronic spreadsheet, VisiCalc.

Cheapflights chief executive, David Soskin, said: “Lisa’s experience brings an important additional resource to the group.

“Together with our other recent senior executive appointments, we have achieved a blend of technical savvy and financial experience which bodes well for the company’s plans for growth.

Underkoffler will be based in London and report directly to Chris Cuddy, the company’s recently appointed group managing director.

Soskin added: “Our solid and profitable progress to-date has been made possible by investment in the right people and technology to provide the best possible online user experience and content for our sites.

“Having an additional senior executive on board of Lisa’s calibre will be invaluable in helping us enter our next period of growth and achieve our expanded international corporate objectives.”
