New data from market research firm Nielsen/Net Ratings, names Expedia as the top UK online travel brand, while Google leads the broader online brand category.

Lastminute.com, Virgin Travel & Tourism, TUI, and TripAdvisor round out the top five online travel brands for February in terms of unique audience volumes.

They are followed by Cheapflights, Orbitz Worldwide Network (refers to Ebookers Network, Travelbag, CheapTickets, Orbitz), Thomas Cook, Travelsupermarket and MyTravel.

MSN, Microsoft, Yahoo! and BBC rounded off the top online brands.

Due to a change to Nielsen’s methodology, February 2006 figures are unavailable for comparison.

Though Nielsen offered October 2006 data for comparison purposes, the seasonal differences between October and February skew the figures.

Travolution was presented with earlier data from August 2006, which put Expedia, Lastminute.com and Cheapflights as the top three ranking travel sites, followed by Thomas Cook, TravelSupermarket, Ebookers and Opodo.

However, Nielsen said that the methodology change means you cannot compare any figures pre-October 2006 with any figures from October 2006 onwards.

Nielsen is also expected to release its latest data naming the top UK search engines by share this week.
