Simon Thompson, the man behind Honda’s award-winning Cog ad campaign, is to join Lastminute.com as its new chief marketing officer.

The appointment follows the departure of Niall McKinney, who is leaving the online travel agency to launch a “social networking start-up”.

Most recently Thompson has been European marketing director for mobile phone manufacturer Motorola, where he joined from Honda in 2006 following the Cog and Choir campaigns.

He will report to deputy chief executive Damon Tassone and be responsible for all marketing activity across the Lastminute.com and Travelocity Europe businesses.

The brief will also include search engine optimisation, public relations, CRM, PR, above-the-line advertising and merchandising.

Tassone said: “His [Thompson’s] experience of working for businesses with a strong brand heritage will prove invaluable and provide us with fresh perspective in continuing to develop future strategy and brand direction for the pink lastminute.com brand and the wider portfolio throughout our European markets.”

McKinney’s tenure at Lastminute.com lasted just over 12 months, joining from magazine publisher IPC Ignite! in February last year.

Thompson joins the agency on April 16.
