Mike Nelson, head of Cendant’s Orbitz online travel business in the US, has been appointed chief operating officer of Cendant Travel Distribution Services’ International Markets.

The former Diageo, Deluxe Corp and Arthur Anderson executive has been credited with playing a major role in the original Orbitz management team in the US ahead of its sale to Cendant in 2004.

Nelson’s new role as COO for Cendant’s global consumer business will cover markets in Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.

He will have responsibility for Cendant’s array of online travel brands including EBookers, HotelClub, Rates To Go, Travelbag and Octopus Travel.

The move was triggered by the departure of Ronen Stauber, who held the same role, to another position within Cendant.

During his stint at Orbitz, Nelson guided the company to profitability within three years of its launch.

Nelson will report directly to Mitch Truwit, president and chief executive of Cendant Travel Distribution Services global consumer travel business.

Nelson will also replace Stauber on Travolution’s executive board.
