Pinterest gets into travel inspiration with Place Pins

Online pinboard Pinterest has launched a new travel inspiration tool.

Place Pins allow travellers to add pins to the maps of place they plan to visit showing attraction they want to visit or restaurants they want to dine in.

Pinterest claims to have more than 750 million places of interest that people want to visit pinned with 1.5 million added every day.

Users can share these pins within their networks and when in the destination they can add pins of places they visit and find places they pinned ahead of travelling via their smartphones.

Pinterest has teamed up some of the best names in travel to inspire the creation of creative Place Pin boards. Travel themes they have live include:

• World’s best festivals
• Where to enjoy Christmas in London
• Bucket list – best happy hour spots around the world
• Young, wild and free – snowboard destinations
• UNESCO world heritage sites in the UK
• World’s best street markets

Writing on the site’s blog Justin Edmund, Product Designer, at Pinterest, said:

“About a year ago, we noticed Pinners creating more and more boards around the vacations they’re planning, special places near where they live and sites they want to see someday.

“In fact, every day people Pin about 1.5 million places, and now there are more than 750 million Pins of these destinations on Pinterest.

“We asked ourselves, how can we help people turn their travel inspiration into reality? Today, we’re taking a first step toward that goal with Place Pins.

“Place Pins were designed to combine the beautiful imagery of a travel magazine with the utility of a map online so you can share it with friends.

“You can access them from anywhere on your smartphone, too, which means you can find new places on the go and even get directions.

“Place Pins also include extra details like the address and phone number right on the Pin so you can easily pull up useful info on a weekend adventure or before a night out.”
