Consumer portal Lycos has launched a travel search tool for flights and is expected to add similar functionality for hotels and package holidays.

The system, which will run on the Lycos Shopping network, has been created by the Lycos-owned price search technology company Pangora.

Opodo, Nofrills, Wegolo, Air Berlin, MyTravel and Skytours have been selected by Pangora to act as search partners with the engine.

Pangora UK head Rob Staunton said: “The launch of the travel price comparison service adds another string to the Pangora bow. It means we can offer our portal partners a service that will add e-commerce functionality where they have existing travel channels.

Lycos, through its Pangora business, currently powers a number of shopping price comparison engines on other consumer sites including AOL, Yell.com, Virgin.net and T-Online.

It is expected the travel search functionality will rolled out to existing partners in the future.

An existing deal on the Lycos portal with meta search engine Travelsupermarket is not currently affected despite the emergence of what effectively is a rival system on the Lycos Shopping  network.
