German start-up refund.me, which helps passengers worldwide claim compensations for flight delays, cancellations, missed connections and diversions, has been named the top app by Sabre.

The Sabre Red Appy Award recognises the innovative business idea and its design for the Sabre workspace environment and the efforts of refund.me in making passenger rights more transparent and accessible.

Refund.me has claimed compensation for more than a 1,000 passengers from 116 airlines in 43 countries from five continents since being established nine months ago.

The company recently launched in the UK, US, Spain, Argentina and Mexico and is expanding to support passenger rights worldwide.

It was one of eight finalists for the award and was ultimately chosen for its business concept and application that makes it easier for agents and travellers to claim compensation for flights eligible under EU Regulation EC 261/04.

Refund.me has simplified the process of claiming compensation through a cloud-based and largely automated procedures. Automatic monitoring of all bookings claims to ensure that no eligible flight is missed and compensation claims are filed.

In addition to its mobile app and online platform to help consumers, refund.me is monitoring reservations made by Sabre travel agents. The app automatically notifies agents and operators if a flight they have reserved is likely eligible for compensation.

Chief executive Eve Buechner said: “The Top Sabre Red Appy Award is a great testament to our efforts to make passenger rights more transparent and accessible. It recognises the difference our business idea and its implementation can make in helping passengers claim their right.”
