Ebookers will kick off what could be the most crucial year in its history with a massive discount competition for users buying holidays during January.

The promotion runs from 8 to 12 January on Ebookers.com and will see every hundredth holiday booked on the website discounted to £0.99.

The activity marks what many industry watchers suspect will be a major attempt by the online travel agent during 2007 to resurrect its position as a leading player in the online travel space.

A major marketing push for the brand will coincide with an official relaunch of the website in April, a move that will be the first part of a major overhaul of parent company Travelport’s technology across its businesses, including Gullivers and Orbitz.

Since being snapped up by Cendant in 2005, Ebookers has been the subject of continued speculation as to its long term future, especially with the admission during 2006 that the technology powering the site needed to be radically overhauled.

The discount promotion in January has been timed to coincide with the traditionally busy period in the first quarter of each year.

Head of marketing at Ebookers, Claire Howard-Jones, said: “The major destinations are likely to be in big demand, with discounts to popular selling cities like Bangkok, Orlando, Dubai, Sydney and Cape Town being snapped up quickly.

“Faro and Malaga are always popular choices for those looking for some sun and further for the long-haul traveller, Sydney is also bound to be in great demand.”
