A Facebook app – 101 Things To Do Before You Go Abroad – has been unveiled by VisitEngland as the national tourist board uses the social network to encourage more domestic breaks.

The tourist board has evidence of a “distinct lack of knowledge” about what is on offer in England.

The app is designed to fill that gap and stimulate a “renewed buzz” about England as a holiday destination.

VisitEngland research shows that 20% plan to take more breaks in England as a result of the “feel good factor” stimulated by the events of 2012.

The trade and consumers are being invited to nominate their favourite English experiences by uploading suggestions and pictures to the app.

Nominations cover six categories: Food & Drink; Arts & Culture; Health & Fitness; History & Heritage; Wildlife & Nature; and Because it’s Awesome.

Once approved, the suggestions will be pinned onto a map of England so other visitors can view and then vote for their favourites.

Anyone nominating or voting will be entered into a prize draw to win a weekend break away.

The app will be live until March 10 and a selection of nominations will be announced during English Tourism Week on March 16-24, with the full 101 announced on April 23, St George’s Day.

Chief executive James Berresford said: “Only including 101 Things to do in England before you go abroad will be the challenge.

“There is so much on offer in England which is capable of taking our breath away.

“We hope this app will inspire Britons everywhere to take a holiday in England and remember that this is one of the best, if not the best destination in the world.”
