Secret Escapes has been awarded Online Business of the Year at the 2012 Startups Awards.

The travel website, which offers its members exclusive and flash sales, was singled out by the judges in the ninth annual awards for “incredibly strong turnover and growth in 2012”.

The business was praised for its TV advertising campaign, which increased its membership by an impressive 1.3 million.

The judges described the company’s decision to invest substantially in TV advertising as a very bold move and were impressed by Secret Escapes’ Net-promoters score of 57.

Chief executive Alex Saint said: “This is a fantastic accolade for us, a celebration of our innovative approach and the effectiveness of our model and business in the UK market.

“We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves as the top provider of luxury travel deals and are very proud and delighted to be recognised by the industry for our leading position in the field.”

Winners of the awards were selected by a judging panel consisting of some of UK entrepreneurs, including Duncan Bannatyne, a business angel on the BBC programme Dragons’ Den, and internet entrepreneur Marc Worth, founder of Stylus.
