Air Berlin flies past 1m iPhone app check-ins

Air Berlin is to enhance its iPhone app with a new update before the end of the year.

This will allow boarding passes, cinema tickets, coupons and customer reward cards to be managed on a single user interface.

Stored information appears on the lock screen of the iPhone depending on the time and place, and push notifications are shown on request.

Tickets and boarding passes should open automatically as required on the iPhone lock screen and can be scanned directly from the device.

The enhanced mobile capability is coming as the airline clocked up one million check-ins via its iPhone application, with more than 500,000 passengers having installed the app.

E-commerce vice president Daniel Haisch said: “We offer the option of online check-in via the app from up to 30 hours before departure until shortly before take-off.

“Standard industry practice is from just 24 hours before departure. The 30-hour window we offer is an important factor, especially for business travellers who need to optimise the organisation of their journey.”

If passengers have checked in via the app and do not have hold baggage, they can go straight to the airport departure gate.
