Budget airline Ryanair has released a booking and flight info app for iPhone and iPad, taking the unusual step of charging a download fee while competitor’s equivalents are available for free.

The app, which is priced at €3 and can be downloaded from iTunes, allows customers to make and review flight bookings across the airline’s 1,500 routes, check timetables and add services such as checked baggage and priority boarding.

Users will also be updated on new routes and sale offers via the app, and can book car hire with Ryanair’s auto rental partner Hertz.

Launching the product, airline chief Michael O’Leary said: “Ryanair is pleased to launch our latest passenger initiative (the iPhone/iPad app) which will allow passengers to book Europe’s lowest fares, manage their booking, and keep up-to-date with Ryanair news, directly from their iPhone or iPad.

“Passengers can now book Ryanair flights anywhere they take their phone, day or night, ensuring that they never miss out on our lowest fares.”
