Amadeus supports EC initiative to boost tourism

Amadeus has backed the launch of a European Commission initiative designed to boost low season travel between Europe and South America.

Brazil, Argentina and Chile are to act as pilot countries.


The commission hopes to use spare airline and accommodation capacity to benefit the local economies of the host destinations.


A low season tourism pilot project workshop in Sao Paulo gathered experts ranging from airlines to travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, destinations and other industry stakeholders.


Amadeus south Latin America general manager Marcus Peixoto presented an overview of tourism trends and flows between South America and Europe, while outlining the opportunities.


He said: “We are convinced this initiative will highly enhance the travel and tourism sector’s competitiveness on both sides of the Atlantic and also increase the travel flow between both regions.


“We believe this is just the beginning of a very fruitful relationship that will bring the two regions’ economies closer.”


Industry affairs vice president Svend Leirvaag added: “Through this project Amadeus has engaged with the European Commission to support its efforts in developing the tourism sector in Europe, whilst reinforcing the competitiveness of European travel and tourism enterprises via technology.


“We consider our relationships with key travel industry stakeholders around the globe to be key assets, which we are pleased to offer to ensure the success of this programme.”


Amadeus agreed in January to facilitate the technology tools and solutions to deploy the scheme, track the results and support the commission in establishing contacts in South America as well as participating in joint promotional activities.
