What is claimed to be east and central Africa’s first Metasearch engine for flights and hotels has been created with the backing of travel search engine Momondo.com.

Twendetwende (www.twendetwende.co.ke) allows users in the region to compare pricing from more than 700 OTAs and airline websites, and 25 hotel vendors that search more than 400,000 properties worldwide

The site will also feature information on destinations, new hotels and travel lodges across the East African region.

The website is being launched by Momondo.com and Nation Media Group, which has operations in print, broadcast and digital, and runs nine newspapers, three TV stations, four radio stations and  consumer-facing websites in east and central Africa.

Nation Media Group marketing director Ann Gitao said:  “We run some of the most visited sites in Africa, and Twendetwende, which means ‘Let’s Go Let’s Go’ in Swahili, will provide an ideal platform for travellers in our region- both across east Africa and Africa wide travellers.

“We will also follow it up in a month’s time with a co.ug domain for our Ugandan market, followed by .co.tz domain for our Tanzanian market.

“Our consumer-facing websites draw close to 50 million page views and five million unique users per month and we felt it was the right time to launch such a product in the market, with internet access and air travel improving significantly, in the past 18 months.”

Momondo partner Martin Lumbye said: “We were very glad to be approached by one of the leading media houses from Africa, as expansion into the African market has been on our agenda for some time.”
