Spannerworks has been selected by price comparison site Cheapflights to handle search marketing duties as it looks to grow its US business and expand into overseas markets.

The Brighton-based SEO specialist will focus primarily on optimising Cheapflights in the US and ensure North American consumers are directed to its dot-com website, rather than the dominant UK version.

Cheapflights handles its own pay-per-click marketing activity and, prior to the current deal being signed, used the AmberGreen SEO agency for organic search duties.

Spannerworks’ new social media division, headed by Antony Mayfield, will also assist Cheapflights in its bid to address the growing social networking market.

Head of online marketing & global SEO at Cheapflights, Shahin Fard, said: “We know our search. The technical and strategic insight that the team at Spannerworks provide fills a 5% gap in our knowledge, but adds 100% value. This helps us remain leaders in our market.”

Cheapflights has stated its desire to expand the business into new markets in the coming months, despite admitting 2007 could see a potential sale of the company, floatation on the London Stock Exchange or new round of investment.

Company chairman Hugo Burge, who has spent a number of years in the US, building the Cheapflights.com business, returned to the UK in August to concentrate on rolling out the brand into other European territories.
