Travel agent consortium Freedom Travel has launched a self-booking rail ticket system as it attempts to challenge the increased number of consumers booking tickets direct with suppliers.

The web-based system will be rolled out to Freedom’s 100 agencies nationwide and offer them a commission on all sales.

Freedom said the product, which has been developed by its Evolvi sister division, would also allow agents to charge a booking fee if appropriate.

Freedom Travel Agents Consortium deputy manager, Alison Holmes, said: “In the days of dynamic packaging we have recognised that our members want to offer every service possible to their customers.

“In order to address increased competition from the internet, direct sell from tour operators, reduced commission rates and business overheads, travel agents need to be confident that they are achieving maximum profit margins where possible.”
