British Airways will become the first UK airline to offer mobile boarding to its customers from today.

The tie-up with Microsoft for users of Windows 7 smartphone handsets sees terminal maps included in the BA app. As well as guiding them around terminals, mobile boarding will also allow customers to check-in and download a boarding pass.

It provides real-time updates on flights and at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 will send customers gate alerts when their flight is due to board and depart. The new service is available to BA’s Executive Club, which is free to join. Richard Bowden, BA’s digital marketing innovation manager, said:

“The app has been built with the customer at heart, to give them more freedom and convenience. Our partnership with Microsoft ensures BA is the only UK airline to provide app access across a greater range of mobile platforms and underscores our commitment to constant innovation and improvement.”
