Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher has made a “significant investment” in accommodation listing and rental site Airnb to help its international expansion.

He is also joining as a strategic advisor, the San Francisco-based company said.

Airnb said: “Ashton Kutcher – the man whose social media savvy made him a Twitter force to be reckoned with – has announced that he has made a significant investment in Airbnb and will be joining the team as a strategic advisor.

“The actor and angel investor’s love of science and technology is nothing new, but he has taken a fascination with tech to new heights with his avid approach to brand marketing and social media.

“With Ashton on board, we’ll be working together to take our community engagement to the next level and expand our international presence to reach more people from different cultures all over the world.”

Kutcher has long been an investor in technology start-ups, particularly in California, with stakes in companies such as Skype, which was recently sold to Microsoft for $8.5 billion.

Airnb, which was founded in 2008, began using video in the spring of 2010 when it had booked just 200,000 nights.  After just 9 months of posting video, the site broke the one million nights booked mark at an average of just under 3,000 nights each day.
