Facebook to reward ad views with virtual currency credits

Facebook is to pay users for watching ads on site, rewarding them with ‘virtual currency’ credits that can be redeemed on the company’s daily deals site, Facebook Deals.

Each Facebook Credit is worth approximately 10 US cents. Most of the new ads will be placed in games by publishers such as CrowdStar, Digital Chocolate and Zynga.

The new programme promises a more accurate way to track and customise ad campaigns – as well as traditional metrics, Facebook will be able to provide richer data on who has watched an ad and how they spent their Facebook Credits.

That allows the business to track the entire customer experience and determine the effectiveness of a single ad on multiple segments of an audience. And if Facebook Deals follows the same pattern as Groupon, it could soon be offering everything from spa treatments to travel.
