Airlines in the US are hoping offerign its customers free access to Facebook this month during flights will boost sales of in-flight Wi-Fi.

Virgin America, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, AirTran, US Airways and Alaska Airlines are all offering free access to the social networking site.

The service is part of a promotional campaign with Gogo Inflight Internet. The free Facebook access is available during February on all of the carriers’ aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi in North America.

In flight Wi-Fi has been available for several years but it has yet to catch on with the majority of passengers.

Market researcher Amy Cravens estimated 7% to 10% of passengers on Wi-Fi equipped aircraft use the service. However this is expected to increase as more people travel with wireless devices.
