An iPhone app has been created by the Malta Tourism Authority as its steps up e-marketing investment.

The authority is also in the process of redesigning its Visitmalta portal as part of plans to attract more travellers to the destination.

Expenditure on e-marketing by the MTA has increased year on year with €1million being spent in 2010 against €100,000 in 2007.

The free app includes a destination guide and images. Malta this year hosted the Travel Convention, the annual industry overseas conference organised by Abta.

The island hopes to extend its appeal beyond the traditional fly and flop market by investing in and marketing its historical and cultural attractions.

The Malta iPhone app is available to download on the iTunes app store.
