Travolution honours the best in online travel

The cream of the digital travel industry were honoured at the Travolution Awards at London’s iconic Battersea Power Station.

Steve Hafner, founder of metasearch giant Kayak, travelled from the US to receive the night’s big award, the Travolution Achievement Award, while travel brand of the year went to boutique hotel directory Mr & Mrs Smith.

The event, held at Battersea Power Station in south London, was attended by supermodel Elle Macpherson, who was joined by television personality Calum Best to help raise £16,000 in donations for Nacoa – the National Association for Children of Alcoholics.

Travolution chief executive Simon Ferguson said the fourth annual Travolution Awards had attracted more entries and guests than ever before.

“The Travolution Awards have become synonymous with recognising excellence in the online travel, digital marketing and technology arena,” he said.

“The list of winners, which encompasses both ‘pure play’ web brands and traditional travel companies, reflects the maturity of online distribution and the travel industry’s desire to embrace innovation.”

Other big winners on the night included British Airways, and Audley Travel, which won the best airline, travel agent and tour operator website categories respectively.

New for 2010 were seven consumer awards, voted for by customers of headline sponsor Teletext Holidays and readers of Associated Newpspapers’ titles including the Daily Mail.

Winners of these awards included, for best hotel website, and P&O Cruises, for best cruise site. British Airways completed a double by also winning best airline website in the consumer category.

In the panel-voted awards, the Bahamas Tourist Office scooped the award for best use of social media for its 14 Islands Film Challenge, while Travelport won the Travel Pioneer award for Opinions, and Lowcostholidays was named rising brand of the year.

The Travolution Awards are decided by panels of expert judges formed from the fields of technology, marketing and media. Travolution is part of TWgroup, which boasts a print and event portfolio including Travel Weekly, and the Globe Travel Awards.
