Chris Orton is now the company’s chief marketing officer.

Chief executive Barney Harford said: “Chris is an absolute leader in developing algorithmic approaches to online marketing and CRM.

“We believe his deep experience of applying massive data sets to marketing opportunities will make Orbitz a more effective and efficient marketing organisation.”

Orton described Orbitz as one of the best known and trusted companies in travel.

He added: “I am looking forward to helping establish Orbitz as the most trusted travel brand in the world, and helping develop the company’s online marketing systems to be the most sophisticated in the industry.”

Orton joined eBay in 2003 after eight years in CRM and enterprise resource planning roles for Kana Software, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Andersen Consulting (Accenture).
