Online travel agent Expedia has launched a desktop tool in the US that notifies users when an airfare or package holiday is found below a designated asking price.

The Fare Alert tool tracks domestic and international airfares, as well as package holidays, using a downloadable programme made available on the Expedia.com site.

Users are asked to set parameters for a particular air route or package holiday destination and Fare Alert automatically delivers an alert when a price is found below their set price.

Expedia has also launched Gas Station Locator – an online facility to allow US users to find petrol facilities at key places around the country as well as comparing their fuel prices.

The top 50 airports in the US have been included in the tool, which is targeting the car hire market on the Expedia.com site.

Vice president of air for Expedia.com, John Morrey, said: “Despite rising prices and industry reports of more costly air travel, demand for summer travel remains strong.

“The Expedia Fare Alert and Gas Station Locator features help travellers avoid rising fuel and airfare prices, especially during the busy summer travel months.

“As the world’s largest online travel agency, Expedia is constantly looking for ways to leverage our travel intelligence to help travellers save time and money.”
