Top 25 rating for Near To Here iphone app

Travel guide iPhone application Near to Here was ranked in the top 25 travel applications within a week of its launch just before Christmas.

The application, which received 10,000 downloads, highlights interesting buildings, attractions and historical sites within a radius set by the phone’s user.

Near to Here can pick up any building or attraction that has been geo-tagged by Wikipedia and provide users, via an alert, with additional information about what they are seeing.

The service has been developed using open source technology so travellers can see relevant content wherever they are.

Zak Tanjeloff, who developed the application, said a version for the Android phone would be available by March.

He is also looking at developing further applications including a range of phrase books offering different combinations of languages.
