Thomas Cook predicts half of its London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games packages will be sold online.

The travel company made the prediction after announcing it is to be an official sponsor of the games and the exclusive provider of UK short breaks and trips to the event.

Thomas Cook will sell packages with tickets to the games from May 2011 but fans can pre-register on its website or through its shops. It is estimated the travel company will sell more than 250,000 tickets with its packages – accounting for around 3% of tickets on sale for the games overall.

Chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa said: “We are very excited about this and we are confident we can get it right. We believe sales will be about 50-50 through the internet and through our high-street shops.”

But he admitted that sales could be higher initially through the chain’s 800 nationwide stores because of a window poster campaign, starting today. The deal will also be promoted on every Thomas Cook brochure, on all tickets and in all 94 aircraft.
