Teletext Holidays is branching out into mobile phone technology, a move that will include images to accompany travel deals and eventually a search function for users.

The development is part of a wider initiative by Teletext to offer services to consumers via mobile phones including news, weather and travel updates.

Initially the involvement of Teletext Holidays will be limited to displaying the best travel offers. Users will be able to discover basic details of each deal before being transferred to the Teletext call centre.

Images and also video are to be added to the offers in the future and there are also plans to include additional features such as user guides, Teletext head of mobile Marcus Thornley revealed.

The official launch of Teletext Mobile follows a trial period in recent weeks to test out the various pieces of technology and the impact of traffic on systems.

Thornley said response so far had been “very healthy”, adding: “We are fortunate because of the kind of material and types of holidays are suitable for a mobile device.”

Search functionality – if and when it is launched – would be limited to price, destination and arrival points, and type of holiday, Thornley said.

“We are going to see more and more examples of this,” he added. “There is going to be a lot of opportunity for advertisers to reach consumers on their holiday via a mobile phone.”
