New travel technology company Inventive IT is defying the downturn after winning three prestigious contracts including ones from Thomas Cook and TUI Travel.

The Rochdale-based firm has won business from Thomas Cook North America, Laterooms.com and Peel Airports, which owns Liverpool John Lennon, Robin Hood and Durham Tees Valley airports, in recent months.

The company has now more than doubled its team from four to 16 members of staff.

Inventive IT was set up by John Charnock, former head of software development at MyTravel, following the company’s merger with Thomas Cook.

Keen to remain based in the North West and working within the travel sector, John set up the company with fellow former MyTravel colleagues Rory Powers and David Mathews.

Inventive IT specialises in developing bespoke software systems for travel companies looking after everything from data warehousing and revenue management to building websites and social networking applications.

Charnock said: “We knew it was a major risk setting up a new company at the beginning of a downturn but we also believed that the financial downturn created unique opportunities for us to deliver technology solutions to the travel industry.

“Poor market conditions and reduced demand drive the need for improved on line distribution and marketing, smarter pricing and intelligent capacity planning capabilities within travel businesses.”

“To win contracts from three of the industries biggest players at such an early stage on the business has exceeded our expectations, we are growing at a rate faster than anyone could have predicted and the gamble has certainly paid off.”

Charnock claimed it is essential that travel companies invest in IT to ensure survival during the recession.

He added: “The downturn has hit the travel industry hard but the smart companies realise that the industry is becoming increasingly technology led.  Our team has extensive experience of delivering online distribution, revenue management and travel industry business intelligence solutions.

“They can not only identify where the gaps are, but build bespoke solutions to ensure our customers remain ahead of the competition at this challenging time.”
