Shopping comparison site Kelkoo has reported growing popularity for traditional destinations such as Cyprus and Portugal in the past month.

Traffic patterns from the service show African destinations as well as countries outside the Eurozone have taken a hit as consumers turn back to the more popular holiday resorts.

While online behaviour since Christmas shows destinations such as Morocco and Egypt and Turkey were amongst the top searches early in January, traditional hotspots have since taken over.

Travel-based enquiries were initially slower than in previous years reinforcing fears of a slowdown but Kelkoo claims traffic has picked up.

Searches for New York and skiing have been taken over by a 50% climb, compared to December, in searches for late deals and European car hire.

Bruce Fair Kelkoo managing director said: “Interest in holidays outside the Eurozone and the popularity of African resorts had been increasing as the pound weakened, and was most pronounced at the beginning of the year.

“However, holidaymakers are showing their faith in European locations and we are even seeing strong interest in last-minute holidays.”
