The online tour operator Activitybreaks.com has been acquired by the Italian regional operator Il Monticolo Vacanze for an undisclosed sum.

Activitybreaks.com, whose head office is near Belfast, Northern Ireland, is the trading name of ActivityBreaks, an independently operated company which offers activity-based breaks as well as sports and musical events packages across Europe.

The company said the investment reflected the growing pan-European nature of travel, allowing citizens of any country to book short breaks in any other country using the internet.

Total online tourism sales are expected to continue to grow at around 40 per cent per year, with Britain and Northern Ireland being the leading market in Europe.

Future plans for the company include adding a language facility and the development of technology to allow for greater individuality in the packages offered.

“The ‘independent traveller’ is a fast-growing segment of the market and this acquisition will bring new investment and cross-European collaboration in online marketing aiming specifically at activity-based packages,” Activitybreaks.com managing director Alexander Reed said.

“More and more people want to do something new or interesting when they travel but they want to do it when they want, how they want and for as long as they want, which requires flexible technology and software and a strong and varied product offering.”
