An investigation has founded that a faulty circuit breaker was behind last month’s major power outage at communications supplier Colt – a failure which caused lastminute.com to go offline for eleven hours.

The online agent was out of action from 3pm on Friday 4 July until 2am the following morning.

Sister sites such as Holidayautos, Travelocity and MedHotels were also down during one of the busiest trading periods of the year.

Computerweekly.com reports that Colt employed an independent company to look over its 18 data centres in Europe. “No more occurrences of the root cause which led to the issue in London have been found,” said Colt.

Specifically, the fault was with the main circuit breakers for the data hall which hosted lastminute.com.

At the time of the outage, Travolution talked to a number of experts who expressed surprise that there appeared to be no back-up in place. It is not known whether Colt’s “root cause analysis” of its network addressed this issue.
