Online flight specialist justtheflight.co.uk is claiming a first with the development of a flight search and booking service for smartphones and other mobile devices.
The Isle of Man based company, which is part of the Online Regional Travel Group, has launched justtheflight.co.uk/mobile enabling consumers to search, book and pay for flights using a web-enabled mobile phone.
The service also offers travel and airline news as well as holiday and destination guides.
The first phase of the service is in English but there are plans for multi-lingual and multi-currency versions.
A second phase is planned for the autumn aimed at the corporate market.
This release will enable business travellers to search for and book flights with the confirmation sent to their mobile device while booking information is sent to their corporate account.
Brian Kelly, ORTG’s chief executive said the company was in talks with a number of network providers to carry the service with a deal to be announced shortly.
“Mobile carriers are looking for sexy, innovative applications which help them to retain their customers and get them downloading as much data as possible.”
He added that travel applications were right up there with games and music in terms of what consumers want to download.
“Now we have these smartphones, travel is a no-brainer and we believe it will replace the PC for a lot of functions.”
Justtheflight.co.uk, which books more than 40,000 seats annually through the website, received grant aid from the Isle of Man government.
Flight availability information for the mobile service is provided by Amadeus.
