The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has teamed up with Secret Escapes to issue a round-up of travel tips top Valentine’s weekend destinations.

The list covers Barcelona, New York, Reykjavik, Rome and Venice – Secret Escapes’ top five Valentine’s spots.

The aim is to highlight local laws and customs, such as being fined up to €300 for wearing just swimwear on the streets leading away from Barcelona’s beaches.

Cara Fortune, from the FCO’s Know Before You Go team, said: “Heading abroad to explore a destination with your loved one is something to look forward to but it’s important to do your research and keep your wits about you on holiday.

“Always take out adequate travel insurance and if you’re travelling in Europe take your free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) too.

“Check your passport is valid and that you have any necessary visas before you go, and make sure that romantic getaway is memorable for all the right reasons.”

Secret Escapes’ content editor, Emma McWhinney, said: “Holidaymakers in the UK tend to be very conscientious about shopping around for the best price and perks before booking an escape, so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be just as thorough when it comes to researching their holiday destination.

“Knowing about the romantic culture and insider tips of a country could make the difference between an average holiday and an unforgettable one.”
