Maddock joined Cook in 2014 from the OTA during the tenure of chief executive Harriet Green, who was widely credited with turning the firm’s fortunes around, to develop its city break business.

His new role at the Telegraph will see him help the publisher monetise its travel content and to help the title become more established as a travel brand.

Maddock said: “I’m proud to have worked for such a strong brand as Thomas Cook through a period of positive transition.

“I wish Chris [Mottershead, UK and Ireland managing director] all the best for the future.”

Mottershead said: “Since joining the business, Mark has done a great job leading and developing Thomas Cook’s cities programme.

“I’d like to personally thank him for his efforts, and, on behalf of everyone at Thomas Cook, we wish him well in his new role.”

Thomas Cook added it “remains committed to further developing its city break programme, which remains an important part of the company’s product offering”.
