Flight search platform Cheapflights recorded its busiest ever day of traffic on Monday with more than 500,000 visits across its various websites.

The figure represented a 60% overall year-on-year increase, the company claimed.

The most searched for destination was Menorca followed by Dalaman in Turkey, Palma, Paphos, Lanzarote, Faro, Alicante, Malaga, Barcelona and Larnaca.

The company attributed the surge to widespread January airline seat sales and people determined to put the wettest December on record behind them.

Analysis of the Cheapflights.co.uk search data suggests that the Mediterranean will once again be the overseas destination of choice for UK holidaymakers in 2016, with pre- and post-Christmas volumes differing by an average of 536%.

However, long haul destinations also remain a popular choice with Orlando (429% week-on-week increase) overtaking New York, Las Vegas and Bangkok as the most-searched route.

At a regional level, East Midlands residents are proving to be the keenest to get away, with searches for flights from Doncaster Robin Hood airport peaking at a 733% increase over the new year weekend, followed by Bournemouth (646%), Southampton (632%) and Norwich (628%).

Managing director, Andrew Shelton, said: “This is traditionally a busy time for the travel industry with up to 40% of all bookings made in a four week window. But this spike is off the scale.

“There’s clearly a lot of pent-up demand out there as travel-savvy Brits held off making their bookings until they got back to work, in the knowledge the major airlines and holiday companies would drop their prices come Boxing Day.”

He added: “Year-on-year, our demand across all our platforms is up by 68% so far this month, fuelled no doubt partly by what was the wettest December on record, as well as our new marketing campaign which has so far driven a 90% increase in direct traffic across our site and app.”

Cheapflights’ record-breaking start to the year was also reflected in that for Momondo Group, of which it is a part of, with online inspiration and search platform, momondo.

January 4 was also Momondo Group’s busiest-ever day, seeing more than one million visits across the group for the first time, generating more than two million searches and returning in excess of 4.3 billion results for users globally.
