Puerto de la Cruz in north Tenerife is adding new features including a real-time booking engine for local hotels to its new site, due to go live in the next few weeks.

The site – Puertodelacruz.es – is modestly funded, getting around £4,000 a year from the local authority’s tourism budget.

The booking engine is provided by a NORAY, a private business which already has a relationship with local hoteliers. As well as bookings, hotels will be able to access their page on the web site to provide content which will help push the site up the natural search rankings.  The current site is only getting around 800 visitors a month.

The new site will also include a visitors’ book and online forum, with locals encouraged to contribute their recommendations alongside the comments from visitors.

A spokesperson said that potential visitors’  first impression of the town is the web site’s home page, which has been ‘spring-cleaned’  for the re- launch, with less text and more images.  Four key channels identified – accommodation, places to visit, gastronomy and transport.

Tenerife is looking to re-establish itself as a year-round destination, while the north of the island in particular is looking to attract more business.

In 2007, 1.7 million visitors visited Tenerife, with less than 80,000 staying in the north.
