A technology problem grounded American Airlines flights from its hubs at Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami for almost two hours yesterday.

The technical issues were resolved, but not before passengers started complaining via social media.

A spokesman for the largest US carrier by traffic cited a “connectivity issue” for the halt in service to the three airports that started at 11.30am local time, 30 minutes after the problems first appeared.

He said the problems affected mainline flights and those operated by its regional partners, with the problem resolved at 1.15pm.

“We have resolved connectivity issues that led to a ground stop today at our Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami hubs,” American said. “We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to get our customers on their way as soon as possible.”

The problem comes a month before the carrier plans to migrate merger partner US Airways onto the American Airlines reservation system on October 17, the Wall Street Journal reported.
