Travelzoo has echoed Thomas Cook in reporting rising interest in the so-called ‘troubled trio’ countries of Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia.

The travel and entertainment deals publisher has seen searches for deals rise so far this year by 43% to Egypt, Turkey by 43% and Tunisia by 133%.

The traditionally popular package holiday regions had seen visitor figures plummet in the wake of terror attacks in the eastern Mediterranean and North Africa as confidence from both consumers and the travel industry faded and airlines withdrew routes.

Travelzoo general manager, Joel Brandon-Bravo, said: “There is definitely a feeling of confidence coming from our partners about selling what we call the ‘troubled trio’.

“We’ve seen the return of Nile cruise deals being promoted by partners such as Broadway Travel.

“These sorts of deals have been off the radar for a while as some operators were reluctant to promote Egypt for fear of a high refund rate were there to be another incident.”

He added: “We’ve also seen the first deals to Tunisia and a burst of deals to Turkey.

“Last year the challenge with Turkey was that even though there were great rates on hotels, a lack of flights meant deals were still hard to find.

“With both Thomas Cook and Tui putting on an extra 300,000-plus seats on flights into Turkey each for this year, good fights and quality accommodation at much lower rates than Spain and Greece mean fantastic bargains can be found on summer holidays to these destinations that we see bouncing back.”
