Post Office ticker reveals real-time travel stats
More than 10 million transfer bags were mishandled globally and just under 5.3 million EHIC cards expired last year, according to Post Office data.
Additionally a UK passenger travels uninsured every 12.5 seconds.
This comes against a backdrop of 71 million people travelling abroad in 2016.
The Post Office has responded by creating an interactive travel ticker that features 12 real-time travel stats.
The real-time ticker paints a clear picture of the scale and frequency of some of the most common holiday mishaps.
This will give people “cause to stop and think, especially with August being one of the most popular times for travel as UK holidaymakers make the best of the last days of the summer holidays before going back to school or work,” a spokeswoman said.
