An annual Flight Price Index has placed the UK at 27th most affordable in a list of 80 countries ranked for the cost of outbound air travel.

The cheapest country to fly from, based on an average cost per 100km, was Malaysia, followed by Bulgaria and India.

The three most expensive were Belgium, the Netherlands and Qatar.

Online travel business Kiwi.com undertook the survey to highlight the countries that offer consumers the best opportunities for affordable travel.

Kiwi.com said the UK finished in a “disappointing” 27th place, but it rose from 32nd in the rankings last year with the average flight costing £8.63 per 100km of travel when both short-haul and long-haul flights are factored in.

Malaysia, in top spot, had an average cost of £3.26 per 100km of travel.

Oliver Dlouhý, Kiwi.com CEO, said, “Ticket prices are always fluctuating for different reasons. Some of the changes from one year to the next can be attributed to factors from fuel prices to socio-political shifts such as Brexit and general elections. Egypt and Turkey, for example, saw a decrease in ticket prices because of a decrease in demand as a result of regional turmoil.

“By tracking flight costs by country, travellers are armed with the data to make informed decisions when choosing destinations that allow them to travel further on their budget.”

Kiwi.com analysed over one million flights to find the average price of both short- and long-haul flights on low-cost and full service airlines from each of the 80 countries.

Domestic flights were calculated by finding an average airfare from the country’s capital to up to five major cities within the country, or to a major city nearby in a neighbouring country when no domestic flights were available. The price of international travel was calculated based on flights from all international airports within the country, to several international hubs. All flights were checked for the same dates of travel taking into account high and low seasons.
