Technical problems and bad weather are the two main reasons that flight delay compensation is paid out.

Delay compensation app airFair revealed the results of its research around the busy Easter weekend.

The main reason was technical problems, which accounted for 47% of successful claims.

Bad weather affecting a connecting flight made up 24% of claims and 9% of claims were put down to the knock-on effect of previous flights.

Airport issues made up 6% of claims, as did staffing problems.

Will Smith, head of airFair, said: “A high number of people who experience a delayed flight do not claim compensation, which is why we have highlighted the most common wins, as most of us have been faced with these causes at some point in our lives. Passengers who have had their Easter getaway disrupted could be entitled to a sum of compensation, and with the airFair app it’s easier than ever to check if they are eligible with just their booking reference or flight number.”
