Airbnb rooms are 59% cheaper than staying at a hotel, according to new research.

Credit experts TotallyMoney.com found a large disparity between the cost of using the shared economy platform and staying in a traditional hotel with the capital showing the highest discount on Airbnb in the UK.

The five cities with the biggest difference in price between Airbnb and hotel rooms were London, Bath, (52% less), Oxford (52% less), Manchester (51% less) and Chester (50% less).

Northampton was the only place where a hotel room cost less than the Airbnb equivalent

The analysis also compared the cost of whole houses on Airbnb to a single hotel room, and while 12% more expensive in London Airbnb houses are cheaper than a hotel room in popular tourist cities Bath and York.

In Fort William, Scotland, you could rent a full house on Airbnb for 29% cheaper than the cost of one hotel room.

“When traveling in the UK, it can be hard to find the most cost effective option,” said Joe Gardiner, TotallyMoney.com’s head of brand and communications.

“AirBnB is a great way to save money but it’s not always the cheapest. It can be confusing deciding whether to look on AirBnB for prices or on hotel comparison sites, so we wanted to provide a way of helping people decide on what type of accommodation is the cheapest in the most popular areas of the UK.”
