A website and app for sourcing bars and restaurants around the world is being shut down.

London-based Great Little Place is closing as it has not been viable as a free service.

Co-founder Rossa Shanks told members of the online service that management was trying to find a white knight to come in to take over the business.

She said: “We’ve worked tirelessly for many years on Great Little Place. We had grand plans and high hopes. Our mission was simple: to uncover every single great little place the world over – creating the ultimate little black book of everyone’s places as it were.

“It was a lovely idea but, as a free proposition, hard to make work as a business venture.

“It’s been a fantastic adventure and we’ve always been astounded by the incredible support from the GLP community that we have received. You’ve been extraordinary.

“Over a million people got involved and supported the project, which has never ceased to amaze us. So thank you, and to everyone involved in the project over the years.

“We are also unbelievably thankful to our investors, who believed in us and parted with their hard earned cash to give the project a chance of succeeding. We will never forget their generosity, support and understanding.”
