A travel app which encourages localised conversation and real-life meet-ups has secured £200,000 of investment.

Tripwire received the funding from a consortium including Mad Monkey Hostels, the largest hostel chain in South East Asia.

The app, which targets millennials, aims to roll out phase two in November before a full customer launch in January.

It uses ‘pin-dropping’ technology that immediately connects users to their destination, providing a local feed of real-time information, helps backpackers meet fellow travellers and make bookings.

Tripwire was selected by Apple as a top travel app under the Gap Year Tool category.

“We’ve been blown away with the interest we’ve had from both travellers and partners and we’re now looking to secure further investment to support the next phase.” co-founder Hal Tyler said.

Tripwire is available for download on iOS.
