An interactive online budget calculator designed to calculate the cost of holiday essentials has been developed by Thomas Cook.

The app, hosted on on thomscook.com, calculates totals by using the average cost of selected holiday essentials in a variety of popular destinations, such as a bottle of beer, glass of wine or a three course meal.

Users can choose how many items they would need to purchase on each day of their holiday, depending on their chosen board basis.

The calculator is powered by data collected and compiled overseas and in resort by Thomas Cook Travel Money.

It has also been designed to offer consumers suggestions on the type of holiday that best suits them based on budget and suitability.

Cook’s annual Holiday Cost of Living report showed that Tunisia was the cheapest destination closely followed by mainland Spain and Turkey. The North African nation was a clear winner with a three course meal costing £10.88.

Favourable exchange rates for Tunisia and Turkey also make these the best value destinations with holidaymakers getting more for their pound.

Florida, Portugal and Greece offered the best value beach supplies while in resort.

Cook UK & Ireland sales, marketing and e-commerce director Mike Hoban said: “Whether they’re staying self catering, half board or even all inclusive and want to discover a little local culture outside of a resort where food and beverage is included, the new holiday budget calculator app is a fantastic, visual way for our customers to work out how much spending money they’ll want to take abroad before even travelling.”
