City guide application GuidePal has clocked up its one millionth unique registered user in 14 months.

The company claims to have had more than four million downloads in that time.

Other online players Foursquare and Twitter took 13 and 24 months respectively to reach the one million milestone.

The site offers 60 city guides across five continents which are regularly updated by travel editors who work with local sources. It is available for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone.

GuidePal has recently released new features including multi-destination apps for iPhone and Android and an iPad app with retina support.

Additional features include news feed GuidePal Escape with photo stories and destination reviews.

Chief executive Peter Schierenbeck said: “Working with knowledgeable locals in each city, GuidePal’s travel experts handpick every recommendation, and GuidePal’s popularity is due in no small part to the fact that our users know they can trust the quality of our city guides.

“As travellers tire of outdated print guides but struggle to make sense of biased reviews on user-generated online travel sites, the success of GuidePal confirms that more and more people are discovering the advantages of curated online travel content.”
