Kevin Eyres, former managing director for travel search engine Sidestep in Europe, is to head the European operations for the LinkedIn professional social network.

The appointment comes at LinkedIn ramps up its European presence with a dedicated office in London and plans on expanding its services in the face of competition from popular networking sites such as Facebook.

A number of key sales and marketing positions are expected to be filled shortly.

LinkedIn recently attracted its one millionth member in the UK and has around another four million across Europe.

Eyres left Sidestep in September 2007 ahead of the site’s acquisition by rival meta search engine Kayak.

LinkedIn chief executive Dan Nye said: “Kevin had led many successful European operations and we are delighted to have him leading our team.

“His appointment and the opening of our operations demonstrate our commitment to European markets and both are just the start of a much wider investment in the continent.”

Previous positions for Eyres include general manager for Alta Vista in Europe.
