Android overtakes iPhone for user revenue according to Pitchup.com

Pitchup.com has found that customers using Android smartphones have outperformed iPhone users in terms of revenue for the first time.

The outdoor accommodation specialist has released sales figures for January 2015, showing 48.1% of smartphone revenue from Android users, ahead of iPhone users with 46.5%.

The remainder is made up of other operating systems, with the majority being Windows Phone users.

A year ago, Android accounted for 40% of revenue with nearly the remainder coming from just iPhone users.

January’s figures also show Windows Phone is also growing in popularity, with revenue up from 1.4% to 4.6%.

The iPad is still the most popular tablet, although its revenue share fell from 81.2% to 72.3%. Pitchup.com suggests that a boom in 7 inch Android tablets may have helped to increase Android tablet revenue figures from 18.3% to 25.6%.

Dan Yates, founder of Pitchup.com said: “We’re keeping a keen eye on the changes in booking habits and it will be interesting to see whether Android smartphone revenue continues to outperform iPhone over the next few months and further into the future.

“What we are certain about is that customers are becoming more confident about booking on their smartphones and that smartphone usage and ownership is growing, with smartphone bookings hitting 21% of Pitchup.com’s overall total in December.”

Recent stats from eMarketer show that Android’s UK smartphone market share has grown from 49.6% in 2013 to 53.0% in 2014.
